Some general comments on condition: This car has spent most if life in Montana and its entire life that I can tell in the great west. On a 1 to 5 scale (1 basket case to 5 show winner) I rate this car around a 2 to 2.5. For a restoration project it is great. Here are some points to consider. Rare body style/motor configuration (428 CJ R-code). Car is physically still very solid with mainly surface rust on a few spots and some deeper rust in very few places (rear valence and spot weld spots in engine compartment fender rails). Original hood is still with the car (shaker scoop hole w/chrome still there). Paint is for nothing, but almost every bit of original chrome is still with the car and very usable/restorable.
Interior will need some work to be really pristine but is not a total basket case. Carpet has been removed. Rear seat is physically perfect but could use a black dye to eliminate the sun fading. Passenger seat is great mechanically, minor tearing on seat bottom, seat back is perfect, seat back front section appears perfect but is sun faded. Driver seat would need to swapped for a correct driver seat (currently has a black Mach 1 passenger seat installed). Headliner and internal insulation were shot and have already been removed. Non air dash is shot and has already been removed Instrument panel is in perfect physical condition all gauges present (oil/Amps/gas/Spedo/) No internal tach on this version. Original heater control panel and Philco AM radio, and Mach 1 clock are still installed/perfect physically. Door panels are good but would need rebuilding due to cracks in door handles and speaker holes in lower. Custom wood inserts are perfect throughout car. Window glass: front windshield needs to be replaced due to cracks, all sides, rear pop outs and rear glass are perfect and original. Gaskets for doors, windows and front/rear wind shields would have to go (dry rot gets everything after 28 years).
Exterior: Car is still tight and straight. Some minor dings over the years filled in with a little bondo, but easily put right in a dedicated restoration. Floor pans are solid with no rust. For a perfectionist effort I would probable replace the passenger door (more dings/dimples than normal) and the left front fender (slightly wavy in the upper sheet metal). Mirrors would need a partial replacement on passenger side (right post with wrong side mirror). Front end is near perfect, valence, grill, all 4 head lights, running lights, side markers all in very good condition. Rear end is near perfect but fiberglass end caps would need replacement. Tires and wheels: nothing original. Hood would need some work on front lip (poor previous surface dent repair). From what I can see at present, there is no massive body work to be done, only a good general filling and smoothing effort except for those spots I already talked about.
Engine: Motor and Trans alread removed. NOTE: Original 428CJ was not with car when I bought it.
Brakes: Car has front disks and rear drums.
